The World as it is. A new and comprehensive system of Modern Geography, physical, political and commercial. [Vol. 1 and 2 by W. C. Taylor and C. Mackay; vol. 3 by W. C. Stafford
A three-volume illustrated geography of the world, physical, political and commercial, compiled by William Cooke Taylor, Charles Mackay and William C. Stafford and published in London in 1849 for general readers. The 69 plates are steel-engraved topographical views — river cities, quays crowded with small figures, lateen-rigged boats, cathedral facades — with fine grey tonal skies and wide empty foregrounds usable as caption space.
