Inside Out Library

The Oxford Thackeray. With illustrations. [Edited with introductions by George Saintsbury

SAINTSBURY, George Edward Bateman., Thackeray, William Makepeace · 161 pictures

The collected works of William Makepeace Thackeray in George Saintsbury's Oxford edition, issued in London in the early 1900s for general readers and students, reprinting the author's own pen drawings alongside the novels, burlesques and fairy tales. The illustrations are loose, sketchy line cuts of caricatured figures — pop-eyed dandies, sentries in bearskins, hoop-skirted women, small courtiers — with wiry outlines, sparse hatching and plenty of blank paper, useful for cut-out comic figures, captioned vignettes and crowd groupings.
