A collected edition of Thackeray's works, edited with introductions by George Saintsbury and issued by Oxford University Press in the early 1900s for general readers and students, carrying the author's own drawings reprinted from the original serial and volume publications. The pictures here are small chapter-opening vignettes built around a large decorated initial, with eighteenth-century figures in hoop skirts, frock coats and tricorne hats drawn in quick etched-looking line and dense cross-hatched shadow; useful for drop-cap treatments, costume figure studies and narrow text-column ornaments.
