Thackeray's Christmas books, issued under his pen name M. A. Titmarsh and illustrated by himself, collected in one volume by Smith, Elder & Co. in London in 1872 for family holiday reading. The 128 wood-engraved pen drawings are loose comic sketches: crowded knots of Victorian street figures, bonnets and top hats, tavern interiors, and burlesque medieval courts with crowns and armour, each carrying a small-caps caption line useful as ready-made figure groups and lettering pairings.
