The Seasons, and the Castle of Indolence ... With a biographical and critical introduction by A. Cunningham, etc
An 1841 London gift-book edition of James Thomson's The Seasons and The Castle of Indolence, issued by Tilt and Bogue with Allan Cunningham's biographical introduction and wood engravings by Samuel Williams, aimed at middle-class drawing-room readers. The cuts are small grey vignettes with edges that dissolve into foliage: courting couples in eighteenth-century dress, a fiddler and village dance, anglers on a riverbank, and tree-framed clearings, useful for soft-edged spot illustrations, leafy arch frames and finely hatched skies.
