The Rose and the Ring ... Fourth edition

Thackeray, William Makepeace · 1866 · Smith, Elder & Co. · 57 pictures

A comic fairy-tale burlesque written and illustrated by William Makepeace Thackeray, first issued as a Christmas book and reprinted here in a fourth London edition by Smith, Elder & Co. in 1866 for family and children's reading. The pen drawings are loose outline caricatures of kings, courtiers, sentries, cloaked crones and squabbling couples, with exaggerated heads, spindly legs and sketchy castle or doorway backdrops — useful for expressive line figures, period costume silhouettes and small in-text vignettes.
