He knew he was right
Anthony Trollope's 1869 London novel of a marriage broken by jealous suspicion, issued with wood-engraved plates and in-text vignettes by Marcus Stone for the serial-reading middle-class public. The scenes are domestic and conversational — women in wide skirts and caps at bedsides, dinner tables and parlour chairs — drawn in fine parallel hatching that leaves large pale areas useful for line-art figure cut-outs.
