Spain ... With 21 illustrations by J. K. Meadows
A Victorian retelling of Spanish historical tales by Telesforo de Trueba y Cosío, reissued in London by Frederick Warne in 1872 with twenty-one plates by the English draughtsman Joseph Kenny Meadows for a general reading public. The plates are pale green-tinted wood engravings of small figures in doublets, plumed hats and armour set inside vaulted stone passages, with wide blank grounds, cast shadows and scenes of scuffles, kneeling petitioners and an enthroned king; useful for silhouetted costume figures, arched interiors and near-monochrome tonal backdrops.
