Proverbial Philosophy. (The first and second series.) ... Illustrated. A new edition
Martin Farquhar Tupper's Proverbial Philosophy, a collection of didactic blank-verse maxims first issued in the 1830s-40s and reissued in this illustrated London edition of 1867 for middle-class family reading. The wood-engraved decorations are mostly column-height initials and marginal vignettes in fine line: letters entwined with olive, ivy and convolvulus, a helmeted profile head in a medallion, a boy climbing a sundial, and dangling clusters of harness, tools and chains, all printed open against blank page for easy isolation.
