Proverbial Philosophy in four series; now first complete, etc
Martin Farquhar Tupper's Proverbial Philosophy, a collection of moralizing blank-verse maxims first published in the 1830s, issued complete in this illustrated edition by Cassell & Co. in London in 1881 for middle-class family reading. The pages carry wood-engraved headpieces and ornamental initials built from brambles, ivy, oak and pea vines, twig-lettered plaques, quill-and-inkwell emblems and small landscape vignettes, giving designers a stock of foliate letterforms, rustic display lettering and narrow vertical border ornaments.
