A Sage of Sixteen, etc
A three-volume-style domestic novel by the Scottish writer Lucy Bethia Walford, issued in London by Spencer Blackett & Hallam in 1889 for the circulating-library readership. The thirty-one plates are soft wash drawings reproduced in halftone, showing late-Victorian middle-class life indoors and out: a bath chair wheeled along a garden path, a lamplit dinner table with a servant behind, figures crowded into a church pew, a woman bending over a seated man; useful for period dress, furniture and grouped figures with engraved caption lines.
