A technical manual on the basic Bessemer (Thomas) steelmaking process, translated from Hermann Wedding's German text by William Battle Phillips and Ernst Prochaska and issued in New York by the Scientific Publishing Co. in 1891 for metallurgists and ironworks engineers. The plates are engraved engineering drawings: vertical and horizontal sections through converters, casting houses and rolling mills, trunnion bearings and gearing shown in plan, side and front view, with hatched cutaways, dimension scales and small-capital captions.
