A county antiquarian history of the Lancashire parish of Whalley and honour of Clitheroe, with Cartmel appended, written by Thomas Dunham Whitaker and revised for its third edition by John Gough Nichols, published in London in 1872 for local gentry, clergy and antiquarian subscribers. The plates are steel and copper engravings: church exteriors in open landscape, nave and chancel interiors with monuments, carved choir stalls and tomb effigies, country houses set in parkland, plus engraved dedication cartouches with armorial shields and script captions usable as ornament.
