The Veiled Hand, a novel of the sixties, the seventies, and the eighties, etc
A Victorian social novel by Frederick Wicks, published in London by Eden & Co. in 1892 and tracking English life through the 1860s, 70s and 80s for a middle-class circulating-library readership. The fifty pen-and-ink plates, signed PAL, are loose sketch-like scenes of men in frock coats bargaining, arguing and slumped in chairs, with hatching left open and backgrounds reduced to a lamp, a chair or a gateway, giving designers isolated figures and gestures that drop cleanly onto plain grounds.
