Sir Thomas Widdrington's seventeenth-century manuscript history of York, edited and annotated by Caesar Caine and printed by C. J. Clark in 1897 for antiquarians and local-history subscribers. The index is dominated by square white-on-black initial capitals set in ruled frames, the letterforms built from curling acanthus scrolls, trailing leaf sprays and five-petalled flowers, giving designers a reusable set of drop caps and dense black-ground foliate panels.
