The first century of the Republic. A review of American progress. By ... T. D. W., ... F. A. P. Barnard [and others
A centennial survey of American progress published in 1876, with chapters by Theodore Dwight Woolsey, Frederick A. P. Barnard and other specialists, addressed to general readers taking stock of the Republic's first hundred years. The engravings are isolated machine portraits set on bare white ground with small capitalised captions — Arkwright's spinning frame, a moulding machine, Bruce's type-caster, Lamb's knitting machine — giving designers clean mechanical silhouettes of gears, flywheels, spindles and turned wooden legs.
