In the Days of '54. A story of love and sacrifice, etc
A sentimental novel of 1893 by Flora Maud Wootton, issued in London by the Sunday School Union for young Nonconformist readers. Illustration is decorative rather than narrative: small wood-engraved headpiece panels of river banks, trees, ruins and flocks, framed in rectangles, arches and circles with trailing ivy, blossom and flying birds spilling past the border, several built around drop-cap initials that a designer can reuse as chapter openers and section rules.
