Anton Ziegler's 1837 Vienna picture gallery of Austrian national history, issued as fifty lithographed plates with captions for a general patriotic readership. The plates stage medieval episodes in soft grey crayon lithography: armoured knights swearing oaths, kneeling before a crowned woman, clusters of pikes and banners, heraldic shields, vaulted stone halls and turreted towns, with figures grouped tightly in shallow stage-like space.
