Tom Cringle's log...Illustrated by J.A. Symington, etc
Michael Scott's nautical adventure novel Tom Cringle's Log, first serialised in Blackwood's in the 1830s, reissued by Macmillan in 1895 with 42 plates by J. A. Symington for general readers of sea fiction. The pen-and-ink plates show rigging, hulls and small boats in fine parallel hatching, with captioned white margins, choppy water rendered as open line, and crowded quayside scenes useful for period ships, sailors' dress and cargo detail.
