Annual exhibition [electronic resource] : no jury, no prizes

Society of Independent Artists (New York, N.Y.) · 1917 · New York, N.Y. : The Society · 95 pictures

Catalogue for the Society of Independent Artists' first annual exhibition in New York, 1917, issued by the Society on a no-jury, no-prizes basis for visitors and participating artists. The 98 halftone plates reproduce members' paintings and sculpture in coarse grey screens: seated women reading, hunched bearded men in greatcoats, walled parkland with trees, and a vaudeville stage with footlights and top-hatted performers, useful for soft-edged figure silhouettes and murky tonal backgrounds.
