Exhibition catalogue of the Society of Independent Artists' first annual show, held in New York in 1917 under the rule of no jury and no prizes, issued by the Society for exhibitors, buyers and visitors. Halftone plates reproduce paintings by member artists, mostly seated portraits of women, figure studies and landscapes, printed coarsely in grey; useful for soft-edged tonal figures, dark-on-dark compositions and early modernist American brushwork.
