Annual exhibition [electronic resource] : no jury, no prizes

Society of Independent Artists (New York, N.Y.) · 1917 · New York, N.Y. : The Society · 64 pictures

Catalogue for the first annual exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists, held in New York in 1917 under the no-jury, no-prize rule and issued by the Society for visiting members and buyers. The plates are coarse-screen halftones of paintings by then-unknown American modernists, mostly head-and-shoulders portraits in heavy blacks and grey washes, useful for muddied monochrome texture, blurred edges, and flattened figure-against-dark-ground compositions.
