Bookbindings old and new; notes of a book-lover, with an account of the Grolier Club of New York;
Brander Matthews's 1895 survey of decorative bookbinding, published by Macmillan in New York and London for collectors and members of the Grolier Club. The plates are halftone photographs of finished covers and spines shot flat: gold-tooled strapwork and interlace, armorial centrepieces under crowns, dense floral lace borders, and tooled spine compartments, usable as ready-made frames, corner ornaments, and repeating border stamps.
