The book, its history and development
A survey of book production and bookbinding history written by Cyril Davenport, a British Museum binding specialist, and published in New York by D. Van Nostrand in 1907 for collectors, librarians and students of the book trade. The plates are line drawings of binding covers seen flat, showing strapwork panels, corner sprays, centre medallions with heraldic shields, and dense arabesque borders around empty fields, usable as frames, cartouches, corner ornaments and repeating tool patterns.
