The Book of carriages; or, A short account of modes of conveyance, from the earliest periods to the present time
A popular survey of vehicles and transport from antiquity to the 1850s, issued in London in 1853 by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge for general and young readers. Wood engravings show ox-drawn palanquin carriages, laden mules on cliff paths, long bullock wagon trains and a wicker-bodied cart, giving designers period wheels, harness, drivers and animals in cross-hatched outline.
