The book of delightful and strange designs; being one hundred facsimile illustrations of the art of the Japanese stencil-cutter, to which the gentle reader is introduced
A facsimile album of one hundred Japanese katagami stencils, compiled by the printer and antiquarian Andrew White Tuer and issued by the Leadenhall Press in London in 1893 for collectors, designers and students of ornament. The plates are dense black-and-white repeat patterns cut for dyeing cloth — lattices, waves, scattered blossoms, insects, fans and geometric diapers — printed as flat silhouettes that can be lifted directly as tiling textures, stencil masks or two-colour backgrounds.
