A book of inscriptions
A small 1914 anthology of inscriptions and mottoes compiled by Esther Matson and issued in New York by McBride, Nast for readers seeking short quotations to letter on walls, sundials and gifts. The plates are square decorated initials in heavy line, each capital set in a beribboned garland wreath above an urn, framing tiny scenes of gardens, cypress rows and colonnades usable as drop caps or spot ornaments.
