The botanist's companion; or, Directions for the use of the microscope
A short instructional handbook by the Edinburgh botanist John Hutton Balfour, published by A. and C. Black in 1860 to teach students and amateur naturalists how to use the microscope in plant study. The wood engravings show monocular microscopes, stages, mirrors and lenses in profile and plan, drawn in fine outline with hatched shading and lettered part labels useful as instrument silhouettes or diagram motifs.
