Bouffonneries de l'exposition
A book of caricatures by the French cartoonist Cham (Amédée de Noé), published in Paris by Michel Lévy frères in 1868, mocking visitors and exhibitors at the Paris Universal Exposition for a general newspaper-reading public. The drawings are brisk pen-and-ink vignettes, often paired two to a page, showing top-hatted men, crinolined women, shop signs and crowd scuffles rendered in hatched shadow against blank ground, useful for cut-out figures, period costume silhouettes and reaction poses.
