British painters; with eighty examples of their work engraved on wood
A survey of British painting issued by D. Appleton in New York in 1881, with eighty reproductions of well-known canvases cut on wood for general readers and art students. The plates are tonal wood engravings after oil paintings: costumed figure groups in interiors, theatrical and literary scenes, shore and street gatherings, all built from dense crosshatching that gives usable grey-scale crowds, drapery and period dress.
