British pictures and their painters: an anecdotal guide to the British section of the National gallery
A 1913 Macmillan guide by essayist E. V. Lucas to the British paintings in London's National Gallery, written as anecdotal commentary for general gallery-goers and travellers. Its plates are soft halftone reproductions of oil paintings — wide skies over estuaries and moors, small dark figures and cattle on low horizons — useful as grainy monochrome landscape textures and atmospheric backgrounds.
