Roche, Denis, b. 1868, Tenisheva, M. K. (Mariia Klavdievna), kniaginia, 1867-1928 · 1900 · Paris, Librairie Centrale des beaux-arts; Chicago, G. Broes van Dort Co · 75 pictures

A portfolio of Russian peasant embroidery from the Smolensk region, recorded by Denis Roche and produced under Princess Maria Tenisheva's workshop direction, published in Paris in 1900 for craft revivalists and pattern designers. The colour plates show cropped corners and borders of embroidered cloth: stepped diamonds, checkerboard grids, hooked stems and cross motifs worked in red, green, ochre and black on plain grounds, usable as geometric repeats, border strips and stitch-texture fills.
