Broughton's monthly planet reader and astrological journal
An astrological periodical issued monthly in Philadelphia by Luke Dennis Broughton from 1860, mixing horoscopes and planetary predictions with commentary on American politicians and public events for a popular readership. The plates are coarse newspaper woodcut portrait busts of nineteenth-century men in frock coats and cravats, cut on cheap paper with heavy cross-hatched shading, plus oval-framed half-length figures usable as period portrait stamps, texture swatches, or letterpress-era vignettes.
