Browere's life masks of great Americans
An 1899 art-historical monograph by Charles Henry Hart, printed at the De Vinne Press in New York, documenting John Henri Isaac Browere's plaster life masks of early American statesmen and public figures for collectors and students of American sculpture. The plates are halftone photographs of white plaster busts lit against dark grounds, shown in profile and three-quarter view within ruled borders, giving designers high-contrast neoclassical heads, drapery folds, and aged faces that cut cleanly out of black.
