Bryan's dictionary of painters and engravers
A multi-volume biographical reference on painters and engravers, first compiled by Michael Bryan and revised under George C. Williamson, issued by Macmillan in New York in 1903 for collectors, dealers, and art students. The plates are halftone reproductions of oil paintings — group scenes in dim interiors, cottage genre subjects, and double portraits — with soft gray tonal gradients and heavy shadow that suit muted backgrounds, ghosted overlays, and period portrait crops.
