The building and ornamental stones of North Carolina
A 1906 North Carolina Geological Survey report by Thomas L. Watson, Francis B. Laney and George P. Merrill, printed at Raleigh for quarrymen, architects and builders assessing the state's granites, marbles and sandstones. Its 69 halftone photographs show quarry walls, jointed and weathered outcrops, drill-scored blocks and narrow-gauge tramway track, yielding coarse-grained stone textures, hard diagonal fracture lines and dense black-and-white tonal fields.
