The cabbalists and other essays
A collection of scholarly essays on Jewish subjects — Rashi, the Mishnah, cabbala, the Jews of Spain, and the convert-polemicist Johann Pfefferkorn — by Samuel Abraham Hirsch, published in London by Heinemann in 1922 for readers of Jewish history and Hebrew letters. The plates reproduce early sixteenth-century German woodcuts of Jewish ceremonial life, drawn in thin uneven outline with tiled floors, stacked interior registers, arched windows and crowds of gowned and hooded figures at prayer, table and bath, useful for coarse line pattern, naive perspective grids and stock crowd groupings.
