Caractâeristiques des saints dans l'art populaire
A two-volume French reference by the Jesuit antiquarian Charles Cahier, published in Paris in 1867, cataloguing the attributes by which saints are identified in popular Christian art, for clergy, iconographers and antiquarians. The plates are outline line drawings of standing saints holding emblems — croziers, books, keys, palms, instruments of martyrdom — with haloes, mitres and long drapery, usable as clean silhouettes and symbol vocabulary.
