Greenwich Observatory
An 1872 account of the Royal Observatory at Greenwich written by James Carpenter, an assistant astronomer there, for British general readers curious about timekeeping, longitude and the work of a national observatory. The wood engravings are instrument portraits: telescopes braced in wooden domes, the great equatorial mount on a plank floor, and outline diagrams of early quadrants and mural circles, useful as machine silhouettes, scaffolding and truss patterns, and technical line detail.
