A 1905 sale catalogue issued by the New York bookseller George D. Smith, listing American historical portraits, Revolutionary prints and New York views for collectors and dealers. The plates are halftone reproductions of mezzotint and stipple portraits: officers in three-quarter length, cocked hats, epaulettes and heavily buttoned coats, set in painted ovals or against harbours, encampments and ships, giving designers soft grey tonal figures, uniform detail and oval frame borders.
