A dealer's catalogue raisonné of Dutch, Flemish and French painters compiled by the London picture dealer John Smith, reissued by Sands in 1908 for collectors, auction houses and connoisseurs tracking attributions, provenance and sale prices. The plates are photogravure reproductions of paintings, mostly half-length portraits by Rembrandt and his circle, with faces lit against near-black grounds, fur collars, lace ruffs and linen caps; useful for tonal portrait vignettes, oval frames and deep chiaroscuro backgrounds.
