Cathedral antiquities
John Britton's Cathedral Antiquities, issued in London from 1814 by Longman and partners, documented English medieval cathedrals for antiquaries, architects, and subscribing gentlemen. The engraved plates combine measured elevations, plans, and sections with perspective interior views, giving clean outline drawings of Gothic tracery, clustered piers, vaulting ribs, and deeply moulded arcaded doorways that can be lifted as line ornament, borders, or architectural silhouettes.
