Cento imprese
An Italian manuscript album of a hundred imprese compiled by Francesco Cuomo around 1615, pairing Latin and Italian mottoes drawn from Petrarch and Virgil with emblematic devices for a courtly reader. The pen-and-brown-ink drawings set broken stumps, cypresses, hillocks and cherub heads in clouds beneath ribbon scrolls lettered in capitals, giving designers banderoles, hand-lettered motto strips, and sparse hatched landscape motifs.
