C. F. Menestrerii ... Philosophia imaginum id est sylloge symbolorum amlissima, ..
A Latin compendium of emblems, devices and symbolic imagery assembled by the Jesuit scholar Claude-François Menestrier and printed for the Janssonio-Waesberge house at Amsterdam and Danzig in 1695, addressed to learned readers who designed and interpreted mottoes and devices. The 111 pictures are small square emblem engravings and woodcut vignettes: figures with a telescope under rayed clouds, hilltop towers, river valleys crossed by flocks of birds, and a footed urn of tulips and narcissus, all built from dense parallel hatching that reads well at stamp size.
