Cham au Salon de 1863
An album of Salon caricatures drawn by Cham (Amédée de Noé) and published in Paris by Maison Martinet in 1863, redrawing paintings hung at that year's Salon as jokes for readers of the French illustrated press. The fifty wood-engraved vignettes are small, heavily hatched scenes—ruff-collared costume figures, courtroom and tavern groups, gendarmes, gesturing crowds—each tagged with the painting's catalogue number in a boxed corner label, giving designers ready caption boxes, crosshatched interiors and exaggerated period dress.
