Cham
An album of caricatures by Cham (Amédée de Noé) issued in Paris by the satirical daily Le Charivari in 1853, aimed at its middle-class newspaper readers. The 714 wood-engraved vignettes show Parisians in top hats, crinolines and shawls arguing, eavesdropping and jostling, drawn with sparse outlines, heavy diagonal hatching and blank paper backgrounds, useful for cut-out figures, crowd silhouettes and gestural line studies.
