Chess and playing cards
Stewart Culin's catalogue of the games collection shown at the 1895 Cotton States Exposition in Atlanta, issued in 1898 by the United States National Museum in Washington for ethnologists, curators and collectors. Hundreds of small line engravings record dice staves, gaming counters, boards and playing cards from Asia, Africa and Native America, with incised chevrons, hatching and pip patterns that work as isolated marks, borders or repeat motifs.
