The first English emblem book, compiled and moralized by Geffrey Whitney and printed by the Plantin press at Leiden in 1586, dedicated to the Earl of Leicester and drawing its blocks from Plantin's existing emblem stock. Small square woodcuts sit inside arabesque foliate frames: fable animals, winged allegorical figures, walled towns and men in short tunics, usable as vignettes, spot motifs and border patterns.
