Christianity in Ceylon : its introduction and progress under the Portuguese, the Dutch, the British, and American missions; with an historical sketch of the Brahmanical and Buddhist superstitions
A British colonial history of missionary activity in Ceylon, written by Sir James Emerson Tennent and published by John Murray in London in 1850 for a metropolitan readership interested in empire and comparative religion. Wood engravings record rock-cut Buddha figures, carved doorways with guardian deities, and the sacred bo-tree, all drawn with fine tonal hatching, overgrown foliage and crumbling stonework.
