An illuminated gift edition of a Middle English Christmas carol, hand-lettered and painted in medieval manuscript style by Alfred Trevor Crispin and his wife, printed by R. Clay, Sons, and Taylor for Macmillan in London in 1873. Pages combine red-ruled Gothic textura, gold-ground initials, prophets and saints in lozenge frames, enthroned Virgin with harping angels, and borders of ivy, thistles, stars and nesting doves — ready-made ornament, drop caps and margin strips.
